US: Strong demand, tight supplies for mushrooms

Strong demand past the holiday season has made for tight supplies of mushrooms in the United States. The market has been tight as a result of fewer supplies, and prices could continue to rise.

“Demand is very strong,” said Bill Litvin of Giorgio Fresh Mushrooms. “We really haven't seen any drop off since Thanksgiving and Christmas. This strong post-holiday demand is not typical for our industry.” Unusually high demand has put a strain on supplies, and, as a result, prices have been high.

“Pricing has stayed firm, but it is moving higher in response to the strong demand and tight supply,” said Litvin. “We have also seen increases in the costs to grow, which include regulatory, insurance, equipment and labor costs.”

Pennsylvania, where Giorgio Fresh is located, is responsible for most of the United States' domestic supply of mushrooms. Mexico and Canada also send mushrooms to the U.S., but Litvin noted that Canadian supplies have also been tight.
