Jim Westhoff, Valstar Holland:

"Hope for price revival for melons if overseas import drops out"

A week and a half ago Valstar Holland started the Spanish Galia and watermelon season as the first importers. Valstar buys the melons from cooperations and exports them mainly to buyers in Scandinavia and the United Kingdom. "We have become more specialised in the melon trade over the last year," says Jim Westhoff.

"There is now already a considerable melon supply. Reasonable money is still paid for the 'supermarket sizes' 5 and 6, but with the smaller sizes of Galias the market is under more pressure. The watermelons still have reasonable prices, and the overseas season will be coming to an end next week. If the overseas import drops out, we hope to get a revival in the prices," continues Jim.

More melons were planted in Spain this year. "The quality of the Spanish melons is, apart from some peel damage, good. The product has a slightly lower shelf life than that from overseas. But the warm weather conditions are causing good sales. Traditionally the prices will come under some pressure as the supply reaches its peak."
