Spain: Garlic acreage in Cordoba down 20%

The president of Asaja's Garlic department, Miguel del Pino, has confirmed that Cordoba's planted acreage has dropped by 20% compared to a year earlier, a much higher percentage than the decline registered at national level, which has been of between 10 and 15%. He has also estimated that, by the time the harvest season starts, no stocks will be left, "due to reduced plantings and the news from other producing areas outside the European Union that they are also going to have a smaller production."

Del Pino made this statement after attending the Hispano-Franco-Italian Garlic Joint Committee, held in the French town of Perpignan, which counted with "the participation of representatives of the administration and high level producers from the three countries, and where they studied the reports of the various contact groups and analysed the production and harvesting prospects."

Asaja reported that producers, "in general, believe this campaign could put an end to the disastrous price trend of recent years," and have hopes for a good campaign. Additionally, he explained that the meeting "also addressed issues such as the new regulation for garlic imports from third countries and the difficulties that the sector is facing in tackling major pests, discussing the use of phytosanitary products in the three countries."
