Lindert Moerdijk, MSP Uienhandel:

"Buyers have to get used to new price level onions"

"Our export has been good this year. All of the sorters had been anxious beforehand, because Russia wouldn't come, and they caused a low mood among growers at the start of the season. The Russians didn't come, but we didn't miss them either. I think it's been a fantastic season. Now you're seeing how the free market can cause lively trade. And it's a good thing that the growers are paid well for their produce for a change," says Lindert Moerdijk of MSP Uienhandel.

"Buyers have to get used to the high price levels now, especially in the European market. Brazil is buying onions for now, but nobody knows for how long. There's no such thing as a bale price now, because everyone has different purchasing positions. Now many packagers are looking at each other, but there aren't that many onions left, so everyone knows what it means when they have to go looking for buyers," Lindert goes on to say. "In general, the quality of the onions is very good, and the lower quality produce will also find its way."
