German Conference pear consumption on the rise

Belgians eat more pears than Dutch

Belgians eat significantly more Conference pears than Dutch people. This striking conclusion can be drawn from the GfK survey that was conducted within the framework of the Conference campaign. While Dutch consumption has fluctuated around 3 kg per household per year over the past five years, average Belgian consumption has been between 4 and 5 kg per household per year, and in the last year it has been well above 5 kg. This was reported in NFO's newsletter.

The Russian boycott appears to have had a positive influence on consumption in both Belgium and the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, prices were, on average, 30% lower in 2013 (€ 1.20/kg in 2013 versus € 1.70/kg in 2014), in addition there was a lot of media attention on the position of pear growers. Total pear consumption in the Netherlands rose from 4 kg per household in 2013 to 5.4 kg per household in 2014. The proportion of Conference pears for 2014 is not yet known, but it usually consists of 60 to 70% of total pear consumption.

In 2014 an average Belgian household bought a record 5.66 kg of Conference pears. After the Russian boycott started there was a lot of media attention on affected farmers. Low prices combined with an early harvest lead to a 30% increase in consumption in the fall of 2014.

German Conference pear consumption on the rise
Last year Germans ate significantly more Conference pears than in 2012 and 2013. In both years Conference pear consumption showed somewhat of a dip, but the Conference campaign has restored this. The decline that occurred after the 2012 harvest was mainly due to frost which made the pears more expensive and more scarce.

The average German household bought 0.45 kg of Conference pears in 2014. This is 0.13 kg more than in 2013, approximately two pears per household. Last year in Germany 18.3 million kg of Conference pears were eaten in total. This is known from market research conducted by GfK.

What is striking is that in the North Rhine-Westphalia region - the area where the Conference pear campaign was founded in 2012 - Conference pear consumption has increased the most. It has already been noted that Conference pear consumption is significantly higher in the weeks when store presentations take place than during the rest of the year. In recent years the export of Dutch Conference pears to Germany has shown an upward trend, with a record export of 17.5 million kg in 2013/14. During that same season Belgium exported 8.4 million kg of Conference pears to Germany.

The Conference campaign was launched in 2012 with Belgian partners and with the joint initiative of the NFO. The three year campaign ends September 2015. The campaign has recently been extended by one year, again in partnership with the NFO, with four cooperatives, Timmermans bv, Jan Oskam bv and the Belgian VLAM. Next season the campaign will focus on retailers throughout Germany.
