“The Peppadew was discovered in South Africa 17 years ago and introduced in the US 14 years ago,” says Pierre Crawley with Peppadew USA. “Peppadew is a variety and brand name in one.” The original Peppadew is red and is mainly available in jar form in the grocery store. Later, the gold colored Peppadew was introduced. “It is sweet with an apricot/mango finish,” mentioned Crawley. Like the red version, the gold Peppadew used to be available in value-added form only.“We have gone one step further.” For the second year, Peppadew USA is growing gold peppadews, Peppadew Goldew, for the fresh market. Goldews are grown on the company’s 15 acre farm in New Jersey and distributed to Shoprite stores in New Jersey and New York. They are available in the fresh produce department of the store. Peppadew USA is the only grower of peppadews in the US and the only company in the world that grows this product for the fresh market.
The produce variety has a 90-day growing season. “We plant in May and harvest from August through October, so availability is limited to about three months a year,” said Crawley. “Our goal is to expand to the West Coast as the mild climate in combination with New Jersey production would allow for a longer supply window.”
In recent years, the Food Network has shown consumers the versatility of Peppadews. “Goldews are delicious when grilled and drizzled with balsamic vinegar. It’s also a great ingredient on a salad,” said Crawley.
