for fear of reputational damage

French retailers boycott milk from mega cattle farm

French dairy cooperatives Agrial and Lactalis will not purchase milk from the first large cattle farm in France in the town of Ducrat, north of Paris. This way, the dairy companies respond to pressure from supermarkets. The supermarkets fear reputation damage and demonstrations from militant environmental organizations at their stores, should they sell dairy, in which milk has been used from a large-scale cattle company.

The French dairy organization, the Centre National Interprofessionel de l'Economie Latière (CNIEL), doesn't yet know how to respond. Nothing is wrong with the quality of the milk produced by the company in Ducrat, the CNIEL says in a statement. But it's hard to argue with the consumer's idea of dairy as a healthy, honest product that's produced from milk originating from the own region.

The dairy company in Ducrat has 500 cows, and wants to expand to 800. The aversion to the company may have consequences for other projects. A dairy farm is planned in the Loire region with 2200 cows, and in Brittany, there are plans for a large-scale pig farm.
