Italy: Galatina New Potatoes become a PDO product

Galatina new potatoes (Solanum tuberosum, Sieglinde variety) were awarded the PSO mark on April 21st, 2015.

The production area corresponds to that identified as the "Salento and Ionic area" and includes the following municipalities: Acquarica del Capo, Alliste, Casarano, Castrignano del Capo, Galatina, Galatone, Gallipoli, Matino, Melissano, Morciano di Leuca, Nardò, Parabita, Patù, Presicce, Racale, Salve, Sannicola, Taviano and Ugento.

The main characteristic of this production area is its 'red soil' - new potatoes manage to maintain their shape because it is sandy and the skin remains smooth and shiny.

Harvesting is carried out with simple mechanical tools that do not enter into direct contact with the tubers. New potatoes are then sold without being washed, as doing so would damage their thin skin.

Galatina new potatoes are characterised by their typical rust colour, soil residues and the fact that they are harvested before June 30th.

The production specification will be published at the following link: www.politicheagricole.it/flex/cm/pages/ServeBLOB.php/L/IT/IDPagina/3335
