Home grown potatoes dominate the German market

Potato trade quietly increasing

According to the BLE (Federal Office for Agriculture and Food) newsletter of 16/2015 home grown potatoes dominate the German wholesale market. The supply of potatoes was sufficient and could satisfy the constant demand. And while the quality of the potatoes was of a high standard, the prices remained stable.

Quality and discounts in balance
Due to high demand it was possible to increase prices on the Cologne wholesale market. And problems with the quality of the potatoes were corrected by discounts. These discounts had a positive impact on sales.

Trade unsatisfactory for wholesalers
The demand for new potatoes keeps on growing. The imported new potatoes could increase the diversity of varieties on offer by the wholesale markets, for instance Charlotte from Cyprus and Arinda and Spunta from Italy. However this increased demand has not lead to a satisfying trade for the wholesalers. Even the classic combination of new potatoes and fresh asparagus could not increase the speed of the sales.

Discounts unavoidable
The continued limited offer has caused the demand to stagnate, therefore discounts were difficult or almost impossible to avoid.
