Spanish melon season is coming

Springlike weather leads to greater demand on the German market.
Additionally, the Spanish melon season is near. Over the last few weeks, the first batches of smaller Galia melons were being auctioned. These fetched prices of 1.40 Euro per kilo. Greater quantities are not expected until the end of April.

12 Euro per box

It is looking similar with the other Spanish melon types. Simon Gecer of the BETAFRUIT Handelsgesellschaft mbH explains: “The Spanish melon season does not kick off before the end of April. Then we can make statements about the true quality of the harvest”. BETAFRUIT also has its first small quantities of Galia-melons, Simon Gecer reports. On Frankfurt wholesale market, Spanish Galia melons are sold for around 12 Euro per box of five melons in the 15th calendar week.

Weather conditions in Spain not optimal
Due to the springlike weather of the last couple of days and the rising temperatures, the demand for melons is also on the rise for the German market. However, this demand cannot be fully satisfied due to the small quantities. “The weather conditions for cultivation in Spain are currently not the best yet”, Simon Gecer explains. There is a lot of rain, which could lead to a smaller harvest quantity than expected.” Because the season is still in its infancy, one cannot yet make reliable statements, states the importer. The cultivation area for melons in Spain has been expanded slightly for 2015.

Improved quality through Spanish subsidiary
BETAFRUIT imports its fruit and vegetables exclusively from Spain or Portugal. The import company, founded in 1994, obtains the melons from Almeria, Murcia or Valencia. Since 2002, BETAFRUIT has also opened a subsidiary in Valencia. This enables the trading company to directly contact their producers on-site, and guarantee the quality of their products.
