US (CA): Steady prices for kale

The market for kale from California is steady, as favorable conditions have made for good supplies. But cooler weather could slow production and raise prices.

“There's quite a bit of kale coming out of Salinas and some out of Oxnard,” said Scott Niizawa of Growers Express. “But I'd say the majority is from Salinas.” Demand for product out of both areas has been fairly good, and on April 22, prices for a carton of bunched 24s were between $8.75 and $11.95 out of Oxnard, and a carton of bunched 24s from the Central Coast was priced between $9.85 and $13.25.

Good demand met with robust production has made for a steady market, though lighter production in the coming weeks could result in slightly higher pricing.

“We are experiencing cooler weather, which is slowing things down a little,” said Niizawa. “We have seen some lighter numbers, but nothing huge. Looking ahead, though it's nothing too crazy, we could see a rise in prices with lighter production.”
