Germany: Avocado market remains strained in April
Problems in Peru
The avocado season in cultivation countries Chile, Israel and Spain is drawing to a close. “On the southern hemisphere the season is kicking off now, especially in Peru”, Andreas Wolf reports. “There are currently problems with heavy rainfall. Although it does not affect the harvest directly, it does affect transportation. The container can not get from the warehouse to the harbour by a regular transport route, because the streets are flooded.” The product manager does not expect prices to drop until May. “The largest Peruvian producer will start letting larger quantities of Peruvian avocados flown into Europe in calendar week 20. Accordingly, from week 20 onward prices will decrease lastingly.
Every calibre for the same price
Andreas Wolf is not letting himself be disturbed by the current situation: “At the seasonal intersection between the northern and southern hemispheres, we always have high increases in price. The market is simply swept empty before the new season commences.” The highest demand of the European market rates as calibre 16 and 18, rather large calibres. “These are fruits between 200 and 260 grams. Currently the dealers unfortunately need to turn to other calibres, because the market is under-supplied. This means that nearly every calibre is traded for the same price, regardless of its country of origin.” Currently, the price for a package of avocados lies around 13 Euro, the product manager explains. “In comparison, last year towards the Peru season we had a bottom price of five Euro per package. But during the Peru season we also have an over-saturation of the market every year.”
