Italy: Argentinian pears provide perfect grafts

"The season of Abate pears from Argentina started well all over Europe. The good weather created the ideal conditions to obtain slightly russeted fruit with a red skin and a high dry-matter content reaching 15-16° Brix," explained Ettore Ceccarelli. The Ceccarelli Giulio company, led by brothers Ettore, Achille and Massimiliano, has been importing counter-seasonal William, Max Red Bartlett and mainly Abate Fetel pears from the Rio Negro area in Argentina for the past seven years.

"We carry out all operations - cultivation, harvesting, processing and storing - with the utmost professionalism. Residue levels are very low thanks to a dry and ventilated weather (so less fungi treatments are needed) and the latest integrated control and sexual confusion techniques (i.e. less pesticides). Not only do these pears not enter into competition with the Italian produce, but they actually constitute a natural continuation in the supply."

"Together with our Argentinian producers, we developed a procedure to reach the perfect ripening stage in the shops - maybe that is why our sales doubled in the first three weeks of April with respect to last year."

"Thanks to imports from the Southern hemisphere, we can supply pears to our clients twelve months a year. We work to provide the perfect service from taste, to reliability and packaging, which is available in the new black Ifco lift-lock in addition to cartons and Eps."

Supply is carried out over four months and the produce is mainly directed towards supermarkets in Northern Europe - Germany in particular - and Italy.
