Size, ease of curdle and excellent post-harvest

Ateneo, the new vine tomatoes from Semillas Fitó

Semillas Fitó has taken a huge leap in recent years in the tomato segment. For this campaign, Semillas Fitó is presenting Ateneo as its big novelty in vine tomatoes as it was already tried out very successfully in the greenhouses of Almeria.

Ateneo is a vine tomato recommended for plantings that range from the first week of August until the first week of September. According to José Jiménez, sales engineer at Semillas Fitó in Roquetas (Almería), "Ateneo is a vigorous, open and very airy plant variety, which prevents it from rotting because of the rain. Its plant has short internodes and a great ability to curdle both in heat and cold, which is very important, because the first branches do not crack. In addition, Ateneo has a high resistance to nematodes."

Regarding its fruits, Jose noted that, "in long cycle plantations, Ateneo presents more than 60% of gauge G and in the fall, high M, which gives it an added value. In addition, its good consistency, excellent post-harvest and better taste make it a tomato that will be highly valued by the industry very soon."

The company is committed to the development of tomato varieties. It has invested heavily in improving its centre at Santa María del Águila (Almería) and has managed to become a benchmark in this important market segment. Some examples of the tomato improvement programs conducted by the company include Byelsa, pear G; Duratom in long life loose tomatoes; Bigram, in large calibre vine tomatoes; and Molier in G gauge vine tomatoes for the entire campaign.

The whole team of Semillas Fitó, including its sales engineers, is available to provide farmers and cooperatives more extensive information about this variety and to visit the greenhouses that are already using it.
