"Hein Buedts: "€10 is reasonable and saleable"

Belgium: Asparagus market normalized again

Asparagus is not yet in full production. As expected, the supply will continue to increase in the coming weeks. The price has been high and peaked at 24 Euro around Easter. The market is back to normal and asparagus are going for 10 Euro per kilo. According to Hein Buedts the high price mainly has to do with the fact that everyone was 'jumping' on the asparagus early this year.

Gap in production
"Production was not yet high and there was demand in the beginning of March already. There was greenhouse asparagus, but not a lot. Everyone wanted to have them on the shelves around Easter, so they had to be divided up." The greenhouse asparagus season is almost over. "Normally outdoor production takes over, but the cultivation is delayed. This is why we have a gap in production right now," explains Hein.

Downward trend
In the coming weeks he expects a larger supply, "The weather is great now and the season is progressing. In about two weeks we will once again have full production." According to Hein, right now the price is reasonable and saleable. "Earlier this week it was still around 12 Euro, so there is a downward trend. This trend will most likely continue as supply increases. In about a month I think the prices will be around 5 Euro."
