Tokita Seed which specializes in the production of a variety of tomatoes has developed three new tomato hybrids. Two pink beef type (TY1103 and TY1102) and one mini plum on vine (TC3010), all three will be available in the niche market.
The three new tomato hybrids were developed to improve resistance against TYLC virus. The pink beef varieties have also improved shelf life compared to pink tomatoes without compromising the taste. The mini plum, a first variety for Tokitato being harvested on vine, is expected to have good yielding for this segment, and of course with a good taste and shiny red colour.
“For pink beef we are targeting Japan and other Asian markets, and also East and South EU (even if it could suit also in North EU). Regarding TC3010 it has a wide adaptability.”, said Gregorio Padula, Tokita Manager in Italy regarding the location of where to grow the variety. .
To date, Tokita has all breeding material coming from their research station in Japan, furthermore, they have started a breeding activity in the Mediterranean area in order to develop material more suitable for these areas.
