Prices for watermelons have remained relatively consistent. No change occurred to mini watermelons, while the whole category has decreased by approximately a penny. “We have seen an increase in prices for fresh cut watermelon,” explains Hanselman, “but once we factor in the size of each segment, prices at retail showed no change between the two periods.”
Approximately 5 -10% of the total watermelon supply is exported. The majority of watermelons are exported to Canada, but the United States also exports to many other countries like Mexico and Japan. “Pretty much every state can grow watermelons, but the largest production states are usually Florida, Georgia, California, and Texas,” declares Hanselman, “although these are the primary production regions, many other states supply millions of pounds of watermelon every year.”
The most recent acreage estimates show a decline in acres planted and harvested since 2014 in comparison to the 2013 and 2012 seasons. “Although consumers may see this as a concern, improved best practices have generally increased yield per acre for most farms,” adds Hanselman.
