Asparagus season opening cancelled at short-term

Hunters’ protest spoils the party for asparagus farmers

The North Rhine-Westphalia Minister of Agriculture Johannes Remmel was supposed to kickoff the asparagus season. But things didn’t go as planned. The festivities for the asparagus farmers had to be cancelled at short notice due to a demonstration of the German Hunting Association (DJV).

The German Hunting Association (DJV) protest

"We cannot guaranty safety"
The demonstration of the hunting community is a reaction to the ecological Hunting Act planned by Minister Remmel. Following the announcement of the demonstration, the organisation, Spargelstraße-NRW, was forced to cancel the opening. The asparagus farmers are saying that the organisation did not want to take the risk, since the safety of the Minister could not be guaranteed. The original plan was a grand opening ceremony at the courtyard of the farm Schulze Blasum in Werne. The Minister, many asparagus farmers from North Rhine-Westphalia and the asparagus queen Helene were supposed to be present.

"This step is regrettable, but understandable"
The Ministry of Agriculture regrets the cancellation: "After the nationwide call to the hunters to use the opening for a demonstration against the ecological Hunting Act and to bring hunting dogs, the organization has decided to cancel the event. This step is regrettable, but understandable. I understand that the North Rhine-Westphalia asparagus farmers and business do not want to be exploited for another agenda."

Regional agriculture must be supported
Asparagus farm owner Johannes Laurenz was seriously affected by the cancellation, but he urged to continue to promote and support the asparagus farmers: "It is important to buy regionally in order to support the agriculture. Local companies must continue to work together."
