Antonio Agudo, president of El Melonero

"Spain: "We expect small volumes Senegalese melons until Almeria starts"

The Spanish market is currently in a transition period between imported Brazilian and Senegalese melons, but low volumes are expected of the latter until the Spanish season starts in Almeria.

"We're already done with Brazilian melons and now we have the first ones form Senegal," says Antonio Agudo, of the melon exporter, producer and importer S.A.T. Hermanos Agudo, better known by its brand El Melonero.

According to Antonio, melon prices have been on the rise for the past two weeks after a good campaign for the fruit of Brazilian origin. "Now there are small volumes of Senegalese melons and prices are still increasing, an upward trend that will apparently continue until we start with the Spanish campaign, but always depends on the weather," he continues.

According to Antonio, the quality of Senegalese melons has so far been spectacular, with a really good demand boosted by the warm spring temperatures. He also affirms that "Senegal is the best source to import Piel de Sapo melons when it comes to quality, compared to Honduras or Panama."

El Melonero distributes the Senegalese produce in the Spanish market and exports will not start until Almeria's fruit arrives.
