US (CA): Broccoli market good, could get better
An early start to this year's broccoli season has affected the way supplies have arrived on the market. As a result, light supplies this month could lead to higher prices in the coming weeks.
“There's an upward push on demand for broccoli,” said Joe Kaslin, vice president of sales and marketing for Bengard Ranch. On April 10, prices for a carton of bunched 14s were between $10.56 and $14.45 out of Salinas, and prices for a 20-pound carton of loose crown cut were between $12.56 and $16.50. Out of Santa Maria, prices for a carton of bunched 14s were between $10.00 and $13.35, and a 20-pound carton of loose crown cut went for between $11.00 and $14.50. Kaslin believes those prices could get higher later this month.
“Supplies are light right now because we've been a week or two ahead of schedule due to a mild winter that brought on supplies earlier than planned,” explained Kaslin. “I don't believe there's as much product in the ground, so I expect prices to be higher next week and even higher the following week.”
