Canada: US West Coast crop cuts into Ontario apple market
Acreage is steady within Ontario with tree removals being supplemented with new plantings as part of standard orchard renewal. “While no new varieties are currently being introduced, Ontario apple consumers are encouraged to try new varieties like Ambrosia,” adds Ciceran.
Ontario exports only a small portion of crop to the United States and the Caribbean, distributing apples mainly to domestic consumers. Current apple sales are from excellent quality crop harvested in the fall of 2014. “Ontario is experiencing a gentle start to spring. The weather has been cool and the rain we have received will help clear the frost from the soil,” explains Ciceran, “Growers are out in their orchards pruning and looking forward to the start of a new growing season.”
