US (CA): Spinach market picks up

As supplies of spinach from desert regions in California wind down, production will shift to the Central Coast. While the market has been sluggish, this week has seen it perk up.

“The market for spinach looks better now,” said Jeff Halfpenny, sales manager for Talley Farms. “It's showing signs of life.” He noted that the market has been on the flat side, and growers have been augmenting their stocks with product from Mexico. But the flat trend has changed this week. On April 8, prices for a carton of flat bunched 24s were between $10.45 and $12.61 out of the Central Coast.

“Prices are a couple of dollars higher now,” said Halfpenny. “The market has been sluggish, and people were fighting in the six or seven dollar range. The Mexico deal is winding down and Salinas will fire up soon, and the only way we can go is up.”
