The Central Bank of Honduras stated in a report that Honduran exports of melon and watermelon in January of this year had amounted to $12.8 million dollars, i.e. $3.4 million dollars or 36.2% higher than the $9.4 million dollars obtained in the same month in 2014.

According to the report, the volume of exports of both fruits during the first month of this year was 56,347 kilos, 29.5% more than the 43,519 kilos exported in the same month last year.

In January, the average price for a kilo of melon and watermelon was 23 cents, 4.5% higher than the 22 cents it averaged in the same month of 2014, according to the report.

The Central Bank said that Europe and the US were the main destinations for Honduran exports of melon and watermelon, but didn't specify the amount sold to each market.

Exports of melon and watermelon Honduras amount to nearly $35 million dollars per year and represent a source of employment for 5,000 people, according to local authorities.
