No more tears: Japanese company developed dry-eyed onions

A Japanese food development company claims to have developed an onion that doesn’t bring the consumers to tears. House Foods Company in Tokyo says they have succeeded in turning off the enzyme that is responsible for the production of the irritating substance that makes you cry when you cut an onion.

This development should also make it possible to grow onions that will make you laugh. Whether or not these wonder onions make it to the market has not been decided yet according to the company’s spokesperson.

For their research in the biochemistry processes of cutting onions the scientists of House Foods received the Ig Nobel Prize in 2013. The Ig Nobel Prizes are awarded to scientific achievements that make people laugh, and then think.
