Mario de Goede, Coolfresh:

"Low availability of pineapple resulting in good prices"

Pineapple prices have been at a good level all year. "The supply has been limited since the second week of January until now. Due to the bad weather in Costa Rica there is little pineapple available," says Mario de Goede of Coolfresh International. "I don't expect large numbers until May/June."

The prices might have gone down a little, but at a price of 11 Euro for the good sizes, they are still at a good level. "The first months are always good for pineapple sales. The price will be under more pressure due to the larger supply starting May, but the necessary programmes have been planned. We then expect a large gap in the supply again around July and August, but the consumption is lower at this time due to the holidays and the availability of other summer fruit."

Last year Coolfresh introduced the ready-to-eat line BonSweet Select. "The demand for this is good, but the volumes were quite low over the last few weeks, as they couldn't ripen in the field due to the bad weather and the rain. That supply will start to get going in the third week of April and the airfreight will also commence this month."
