Trudy Teeuwen, Teboza:

"Superior Queens now available for consumers"

During the opening of the Dutch asparagus season in the Markthal, Rotterdam on April 2, Trudy Teeuwen of Teboza presented the 'Superior Queens' asparagus. Until now, they were only available for the restaurant business due to the smaller volume, but now the 'ordinary' consumer can also enjoy them. Trudy notes that the Superior Queens are organically cultivated asparagus. "That means that no fertilizers or other chemicals are used during cultivation. For the opening, we didn't have any 'truly' organic asparagus, unfortunately, due to the cold weather. The ones we presented here are heated. In a week or two, the actual organic asparagus will be available from the open field. All asparagus is carefully picked by hand."

Superior Queens and Queenies
The Superior Queens come from young plants. "It's the soil in Limburg that contributes to the asparagus flavour," Trudy says. "The somewhat sandy soil is excellently suited to the Superior Queens. The soil is light enough for the asparagus to grow, and fertile enough for it to be firm and extra flavoursome. The easier the asparagus breaks through, the more tender it is. We carry the 'normal' Superior Queens, but also the smaller ones, the Queenies. These are delicious to eat raw as well, for instance in a salad. The volume of Queenies is just very limited." In addition to the Superior Queens, Teboza also brought along the wild green asparagus. "These are found 'in the wild' and cut. They grow in Mediterranean regions."

Teboza operates in the entire asparagus chain. "We start with breeding, all the way up to sales. We also export asparagus plants. The cultivation of asparagus takes place in the Netherlands and Spain. We supply our asparagus to various customers in the Benelux, making sure they reach the customer within 12 hours after harvest."

Superior Queens are exclusively available at Rungis. The Superior Queens are supplied in a small wooden crate, and sorted in size between 22 and 26 mm.
