South Korean Ag minister visits Israel

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Yair Shamir, met last week with his South Korean counterpart, Dr. Lee Dong-Phil, in order to strengthen the long lasting friendship between the two countries, and to strengthen the ties and cooperation in the fields of mutual trade, agricultural research and the field of business.

In the meeting, Israel requested the expansion of the trade between the countries in general, and in the field of agriculture specifically, in addition to the existing exportation of goods – while also emphasizing the high standards practiced by both countries in the fields of plant protection and veterinary medicine, and the renewal of the talks regarding a free trade agreement between both countries. In addition, the ministers discussed the expansion of the professional cooperation between the countries in light of the Korean government’s intention to upgrade the field of agriculture in its country and to optimize its efficiency by following the patterns of agricultural development implemented in Israel.

The countries also discussed the issue of the aging of those working in agriculture, which is a worldwide issue in the field. Minister Shamir presented his colleague with the plan and tools that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development had been promoting in recent years in order to encourage the younger generations to take up work in the field of agriculture. As a result, the Korean Minister requested that Korean students be allowed to study and learn in Israel, and that they be assisted in the process of acquiring the well-developed Israeli agricultural knowledge, in a similar manner to other countries for which Israel had opened a window providing the opportunity to study in the country.
