Spain: 19,000 tonnes of non-EU bananas imported in January

In January 2015, consumers have had access to some 44,500 tonnes of EU and non-EU bananas; 1,300 less than in the same month last year, which means a drop of about 3% in the available supply.

While the Canary Islands shipped 32,800 tonnes of bananas, the import volume of non-EU bananas amounted to almost 19,000. 7,200 tonnes were re-exported from Spain, although it is impossible to know whether these bananas where from the Canary Islands or from other countries.

Taking these figures into account, the market share of imported bananas has ranged from 26% to a maximum of 42%, similar to the levels registered in the same month last year.

The main banana suppliers in January were Costa Rica, with 6,523 tonnes; Colombia, with 2,997 tonnes, and Cameroon, with 3,248 tonnes. These three accounted for 67% of the total. Cameroon, with 3.2 million Euro, and Costa Rica with 2.9 million Euro were the main suppliers in terms of value.
