Spain: 50% losses in early and late almond varieties

COAG's provincial secretary for Almeria, Andrés Góngora, visited the County of Los Vélez accompanied by the Head of COAG Andalusia's Nuts department, Juan Pérez, to check the condition of the almond trees after the rains last week, "which despite not being heavy, have persisted for eight days, causing the trees to be completely soaked, which will lead to the loss of a significant part of the production," assures Pérez.

During the visit, both were able to see the extent to which the rain, frost and diseases have affected the almond trees, which will result in "the loss of at least 50% of the early production. In the case of late varieties, the rains will also have a negative impact on the harvest, since the trees were in full bloom and in the pollination stage. You can actually already see how many flowers are falling. Although it is too early to make an assessment, we could estimate that the loss in production volumes for these varieties will range between 30 and 40%," stated Pérez.
