Spain: prices of peppers go up due to bad weather

"In Almeria and Granada, week 13 of 2015 was characterised by strong rain and low temperatures, which led to a drop in production and increase in prices. In Almeria, the bad weather mainly in the western area (El Ejido, Roquetas de Mar) is causing serious damage to 72 hectares."

Prices are per Kg., for high-quality produce not including auction and additional costs.

This is what Massimo Messina, sales manager for Agrodelis explained, adding that the eastern part of Almeria (La Cañada de San Urbano, Nijar, Campohermoso) was less affected but that lower quantities are available there too.

"27 litres of rain per square metre fell in only two hours and the effects can be seen in the photo."

"The rain was less intense in Granada. Over here temperatures reached 0°C for various nights, so the first asparagus were ruined. Due to the strong demand, prices have reached €6/7. Towards the end of week 13, the weather went back to being normal so I expect production to increase, although demand will rise again around Easter."

According to Massimo Messina, the white courgette campaign south of Andalusia is going well, as "the produce is high-quality and demand is increasing."

Rain finally stopped in Valencia last Thursday, "so we can go back to harvesting oranges."
