Heero Gramsma, Nedato:

3-5% acreage decrease expected in 2015

Potato prices have been persistently low, "Potential better prices in the coming weeks and months could come with good processing, good export, slightly better domestic production and the cold fall weather," says director Heero Gramsma from Nedato. Nedato has been engaged in cultivation, collection and the sale of Dutch potatoes for export, retail and the European manufacturing industry for more than fifty years. More than 550 growers are associated with Nedato.

Many moderate or unsalable European products disappear in feed, starch, or fermentation and then are no longer on the market. Right now we are missing the perks in the export, the regular export is doing quite well. Along with a later spring we are also expecting a decrease in acreage, 3-5%, for 2015. This makes it possible for this to be a normal year in terms of prices and circumstances," says Heero. "Table potatoes from import countries around the Mediterranean Sea will be less available as a result of smaller growing areas in that region and poor yields because of the weather. Fortunately, the Dutch product from crate storage is of good quality, so we can get a little farther with that."

He is enthusiastic about the campaign 'Power to the Pieper'. "It seems like a big success. It is wonderful that 1 million people have come up against this campaign through the work of the Nederlandse Aardappel Organisatie (NAO) (Dutch Potato Organization). Currently 100,000 postcards are being distributed to keep the campaign alive. To be continued!"
