The demand for herbs always rises to a peak towards Easter. "This period is characterised by the start of the local production. You can offer some different things and tastes from your own country. Easter is early this year, so the numbers from Dutch soil are still small, but it still feels a bit like the start of the summer season," says Willem Kea of Greenfresh. "We always say: A bad Easter can be better than a good Christmas!"
"At the moment the sales of chervil are steady. We have it available almost all year round from the Netherlands. We also have mint and bronze fennel from domestic soil available. There is more and more demand for edible flowers every year," continues the supplier, who mainly sells the herbs to wholesale and catering, but is also exporting more and more himself.
"We are being discovered more and more on the export markets. We mainly export within Europe ourselves, but our product is going to faraway destinations by air cargo through exporters. We have to work very hard to meet the growing demand."
"Our power is that we have many herbs available all year round, from as close as possible to as far away as needed. At the moment the import product is in good stock. We get most of our imported herbs from Africa, but we also get some from Israel and Spain. We also have some supply from Latin American countries like Colombia and Mexico, although they are under pressure due to the exchange rate," says Willem.
