India: Only premium quality mangoes will be exported

As a result of the recent storms in India, between 15% and 20% of the crops of Seven Star Fruits, India have been damaged. However, Rajendra Deore, Marketing Manager, explains that “This will mostly affect mangoes intended for the processing industry.”

As for the backlash of last year’s European ban on Indian mangoes, Deaor assures that no concerns must be raised regarding the fruit’s quality, since "Delegations from Europe, Japan and the United States visited India and, after due inspection of the pack houses and other facilities. They have all shown their confidence in our standard operating procedures. All growers must be registered with the government and use good agricultural practices.”
Deore explains that in India, mangoes are produced for three purposes: for domestic consumption, which is not that significant; for processing, mostly for the production of mango pickle, and lastly, for export, to which end only premium quality mangoes are used. “The main destination markets for these are the UK, the U.S., Europe, Japan, the Middle East and South East Asia, with the latter two consuming huge volumes.”

He assures that the reason for the success of Indian mangoes in these countries is the familiarity of consumers with the varieties grown in India. “There is also no production in the Arab countries, where the quality of our produce is appreciated, so market conditions in these destinations are ideal.”
