The melon export season will kick off for the Egyptian company Taher Trade in about two weeks. Export Manager Muhammad Abdul Qader explains that “It will start with the cantaloupe, followed by regular and seedless watermelons, both red and yellow-fleshed, around mid-May. Our exports go mostly to the Gulf area and some European countries, like Italy.”
The yellow-fleshed watermelons and Charentais melons have only been part of the range for a few years. Mr Qader explains that “We conducted a marketing study and found that there was great interest for these two items outside Egypt. Since we started producing them commercially, we have registered stable demand and prices from our clients.”
Mr Qader also affirms that Egyptian watermelons, due to their higher brix levels, have a better quality compared to the produce from competitors like Pakistan, and this is reflected in prices. “It will all depend on the client’s needs; if they look for low prices, they are better off going to Pakistan, but in terms of great quality, our products are the best choice.”
