Growth in Spanish fruit and veg imports

In 2014, Spanish fruit and vegetable imports from third countries increased by 12% in value compared to 2013, reaching 978.4 million Euro, and by 7% in volume, totalling one million tonnes, according to data provided by the Department of Customs and Special Taxes of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, processed by FEPEX.

Spain's total fruit and vegetable imports in 2014 amounted to 1,697 million Euro, with third countries accounting for 58% of the total. In terms of volume, imports amounted to 2.4 million tonnes, with third countries representing 41% of the total.

The main fruit and vegetable suppliers outside the EU are Morocco, Costa Rica and Brazil. Imports from Morocco stood at 199,386 tonnes, of which 148,586 tonnes were vegetables, with green beans and peppers as the most imported, with 74,007 and 26,588 tonnes, respectively.

Imports from Costa Rica amounted to 191,595 tonnes, of which 190,456 tonnes were fruit. Pineapples, with 127,112 tonnes, and banana, with 61,203 tonnes, are the main imports from this country.

Imports from Brazil totalled 91,292 tonnes, of which 90,521 tonnes were fruit. Melons are the most imported product, with 48,880 tonnes.
