Chile: La Serena under quarantine due to fruit fly

After discovering eight adult specimens and seven larval hotspots of the fruit fly in the urban area of La Serena, the SAG ordered this area be quarantined. The Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG) continues to apply pesticides so the insect does not reach rural areas and, after the detection of this species in the capital of the Region of Coquimbo, it is surveilling the area.

Thus, the area where the specimens were found is under observation, which includes a 7.2 kilometre radius around the outbreak area, so that the specimen doesn't migrate to other agricultural areas in the region.

The regional director of SAG, Jorge Fernandez, said that they had "applied pesticides in the primary focus area, that is, under the canopy of trees, and we began to check the traps installed during the weekend and found a total of eight adult specimens captured in the traps."
Meanwhile, the Regional Authority of Agriculture in Coquimbo, Diego Peralta said they were taking all necessary measures to enable producers to continue exporting their fruits. It's worth noting that the export campaign of most fruits has already ended, but there is still some grape that will be exported via the port of Coquimbo to China, mainly.
