Strawberry prices up on last year

Strawberry producers from the province of Huelva are usually on alert in March because this is when prices start to decrease, and according to the weekly assessment of Andalusia's Prices Observatory, that is what is currently happening in the markets.

Although prices show a downward trend, they are still 30 to 38% higher than they were in the previous seasons, the worst in decades, according to strawberry producer associations. Thus, currently, this season's trend seems normal.

Estimates are that 25% of the expected total production has already been collected at this stage of the campaign. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development of the Junta de Andalucía, the slight increase in temperatures in March will increase the harvest volume, and the harvest has not reached its maximum production point.

The varietal balance achieved by the sector for the 2014/2015 campaign has also helped them regulate the fruit's arrival to the markets.

In March, the strawberry's price from origin has changed between 1.3 and 1.4 € / kilo, i.e. more than 30 to 38% compared to last season, and about 20% more than the 2013 season.

The prices for Spanish strawberry in the international wholesale markets of Germany, France and London have also decreased.
