According to Genesis Fresh owner Jan Nowakowski, the situation of the apple market in Poland is unusual this year, “Since last month, we have not had enough apples to cover the demand we have at the moment, mainly from the Eastern, but also Western countries. It also includes local supermarkets, which are also demanding large volumes of apples.”
The root of the problem, is that “Growers refuse to open the cold store as a way to boost prices, so we struggle to have enough apples for our orders. Prices are also changing twice per day. However, we do understand it, since prices at the start of the season remained mostly below the production cost. But we could be shipping at least 20% more than what we are currently doing.”
He added that demand for the Idared apple with 60% of the production, is so huge at the moment that its price is higher than that of other apples, despite the fact that it still stands below last year’s level.
Regarding the prospects for the coming months, Jan believes that “Prices will continue to rise at least until Easter, and probably until early May.” He also stated that while the Polish government is supporting Polish growers with subsidies harvesting, lack of apple will continue until the end of the season.
