Prices on the rise

Mexico: Frosts will cause 50% drop in Persian lime production in April

Because of the low temperatures in recent weeks, limes have already reached a price of 300 pesos (US$ 19.80) per 18 kilo box for export.

The sector expects prices to continue increasing, as recent frosts have strongly affected production in different areas of the country.

Snowstorms across the country: the snow caused the closing of the Mexico-Puebla highway

The lower supply is already starting to have an impact on prices at origin, which stand between 10 and 12 pesos (US$ 0.66 to 0.79) per kilo for sizes 150 and 110; and at 16 to 18 pesos (US$ 1.05 to 1.18) per kilo for the medium sizes.

The president of the National Persian Lime Executive Committee, César Cortés Bello, predicted a drop in production volumes of up to 50% during the first weeks of April, so prices could reach around 35 to 40 dollars per box.

Bad weather continues
A sharp drop in temperatures accompanied by heavy rains is expected for north-western Mexico today, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The NWS forecast temperatures of -5 ° C to 5 ° C, with frost and snow or sleet likely in Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, Hidalgo, Mexico State, Tlaxcala and Puebla.
