Special Heirloom Artichokes

“March marks the beginning of Heirloom Artichoke Season for Ocean Mist Farms. Peak season for this classic variety of artichoke is March through May”, said Diana McClean with Ocean Mist Farms. “Premium production time is April in Castroville, CA. Globe variety artichokes grow year-round in Castroville, Oxnard and Coachella, California”, McClean added. The Heirloom Artichoke is unique in that it grows only in Castroville from original rootstock that dates back to the start of Ocean Mist Farms in 1924.

Heirloom Artichokes, often referred to as the red label variety, are preferred by chefs. To identify Ocean Mist Farms’ Heirloom Artichokes from other varieties, Ocean Mist Farms labels each with a red PLU/UPC sticker. “That way, shoppers can easily find them in the store”, said McClean. To promote peak Heirloom Artichoke season, Ocean Mist Farms has started a promotional campaign that includes retail contests, radio ads, consumer sweepstakes as well as display bins and petal inserts.

“There is great demand for Heirloom Artichokes across the country and the season is highly anticipated by shoppers and retailers alike”, said McClean. Heirloom Artichokes can be prepared several ways, including grilling, baking, steaming and stuffing. Visit allaboutartichokes for preparation videos and recipes. Click here for the press release.
