Italy: Good start new carrot campaign

"Usually the harvesting of new carrots in Sicily starts in mid March. This year, the lower availability of stored product due to high temperatures in winter and excessive rain, led to higher prices and to an increased demand for new carrots," explained Patrizia Calabrese, sales manager for OP Consorzio Fonteverde.

The area dedicated to the cultivation of new carrots (around 1,300 hectares) has not changed from 2014 and the production is looking excellent.

"The domestic market is quite lively at the moment, and exports should restart by the end of the month."

"The 2015 season is thus looking good so far. For growers, a campaign is good only when good yields per hectare are combined with satisfying prices and I would say that we can achieve that this year."
