100% sustainability in 2020

Dutch Importer and Distributor HillFresh International joined the Sustainable Fruit and Vegetable Program of IDH, The Sustainable Trade Initiative. The agreement was signed recently at the headquarter in Barendrecht, The Netherlands. The Sustainability Initiative Fruits and Vegetables (SIFAV) aims to make imports of fruits and vegetables from Africa, Asia and South America 100% sustainable in 2020.

HillFresh markets produce of several high quality producers from different parts of the world. Some of the products the company is specialized in are grapes, melons, kiwifruit, kakifruit and tomatoes. “What drives us are taste, added value, transparency, food safety and sustainable production,” says Hans van den Heuvel, Managing Director of HillFresh International. “Social sustainability has been on our agenda for many years. Joining the covenant makes our ambition in this field crystal clear”.

The company focuses on transparent relations with customers and suppliers, 100% food safe products, fully certified to GLOBALG.A.P. or similar systems, good quality, healthy and tasty fruit. Johan van der Leer, Manager Food Safety & Quality at HillFresh, states that becoming part of IDH makes it possible to further accelerate their efforts. According to Van der Leer, IDH can assist on sustainability challenges that go beyond the scope of individual companies such as HillFresh. As an example, he mentions the support IDH gives to SIZA in South Africa. “By supporting SIZA, IDH makes it easier to organize sustainable auditing in South Africa” he claims. “This is a great help and support to the South African suppliers, to us and all other importers”.

Kebba Colley, senior program manager for fruits and vegetables at IDH, welcomes HillFresh International as a group partner. “It’s great to have a major importer like HillFresh International on board that commits to the program and aims to source 100% sustainable by 2020”.
