Lemon with edible skin

Düsseldorf wholesale market is a transshipment centre for fruit, vegetables and exotics from all over the world. At Karl Klees GmbH you can find a speciality at the moment. The company is importing the “Amalfi-lemon” from Italy. Hans Peter Deutschmann is one of the managing directors and owner of Karl Klees and also responsible for the purchasing and sales. He explains: “The Amalfi-lemon is something very special. The citrus itself is completely natural and untreated. Thereby you can eat the lemon complete including the skin.”

Intensive taste and less bitter
The term “Amalfi-lemon” is a protected geographical indication of source. The namesake of the lemon is the Amalfi coast in the south-west of Italy. 2000 years ago the citrus fruit was already being grown in this region. When the citrus reaches the right level of ripeness the Amalfi is harvested by hand. The lemon has an intensive aroma, is very juicy and the skin not bitter. The sun-yellow skin is additionally easy to process. For example for baking and cooking. Deutschmann reports: “Recently we had a small promotion event here on our market stall. With this event we wanted to introduce the relatively unknown lemon to our customers. We had home-made Amalfi-lemon cake, Amalfi-lemonade and bread with Amalfi-lemon butter. The cake especially was very popular and at the end completely gone.” Furthermore, the wholesaler took the trouble to print out the Amalfi-recipe for his costumers. “On the whole it was a very good event”, the merchant confirms, “We have sold a lot of the citrus and even in the weeks afterwards, people are still coming for our Amalfi-lemons.

Thick skin and juicy core

From the outside the difference between the Amalfi and a normal lemon is easy to notice. The Amalfi is bigger and weighs on average between 100 and 120 grams. When the lemon is cut into half, the white layer between skin and pulp is noticeably thicker compared to a normal one. “The taste of an Amalfi is not as bitter as the taste of a normal lemon. The Amalfi is contains also a lot of juice”, Hans Peter Deutschmann reports.

Available all year

In the past the seafarers knew about the use of the lemon. Due to the high vitamin C concentration they took the lemon with them on their long sea voyages to protect themselves from scurvy. Today there is round about 8,000 tons of Amalfi harvested in the so called “lemon gardens” all along the Amalfi coast. Average ripening time of the citrus is around six months. The Amalfi is available all year, at which during March and July the quality of the citrus is the best.
