China plants GMO extension

Despite mass criticism from the population, the ministry of Agriculture in China has defended the use of genetically modified plants, reports the German website Proplanta.de. "The technique could have a big future in China," says vice minister of agriculture Yu Xinrong during a press conference.

The production of food for the almost 1.4 billion people in China causes a lot of problems: the ground water is becoming scarce and the use of fertiliser and crop protection agents is very high. Genetic modification could help solve these problems. "You can't escape scientific and technological development," according to Yu.
