EU finances five onion storage places in Senegal
The European Union is investing millions in the construction of five onion storage places in Senegal. The drying and storage places have a capacity of 100 tonnes each and are planned for the region of Dakar. The project will cost around 900,000 dollars, Boerenbusiness reports.
Limit importation of onion in Senegal The production of onions in Senegal is growing and good storage is essential to prevent loss of quality and low prices, according to local onion growers. The onion production increased from 40,000 tonnes in 2003 to 260,000 tonnes in 2013. But the storage isn't enough and influences the regulation of the market and keeping the onions.
The five storage places should spread out the sales more and develop and strengthen the trade further. The EU's goal is to limit the importation and contribute to the self sufficiency in the area of food.
