Paul Peters:

"Remarkably good demand pears, apple sales still difficult"

Demand for pears is remarkably good, according to top fruit trader Paul Peters from Ingen. "The pear market is in a good mood. Really, all sizes are selling well. Supplies from the southern hemisphere are lower, and the Dutch pears are selling well, both on the domestic market, the 'East', Scandinavia and Germany."

"Last year we couldn't have dreamed of that, but the reality is that harvesting is faster in a year with large pears, and we're in such a year now. I also expect pear sales to continue in the coming weeks. Fortunately, the quality of pears is excellent," Paul says. The price for small sizes (50-55) is between 55 and 58 cents, the size 60 pears sell for 62 cents, and the large sizes, 70-75, yield a price in the upper 60-cent range.

With apples, things are a lot more difficult this season. "I keep hoping for a gap to open up with Elstar in Germany, and that the harvest has gone faster than is being said," Paul says optimistically. "The price won't exactly go up when volumes keep coming in. With the Jonagold, it's a difficult story, and it's the same with the Boskoop, for which we normally could find a market in France and Germany. But if the new season starts later, we also have more opportunities to sell."
