US(CA): Radicchio Superfood certification drives demand

“Demand for radicchio is pretty steady year-round, but it spikes during the US Summer grilling season and around major holidays”, says Emily Lyons with Royal Rose. Radicchio is often featured in Thanksgiving and Christmas recipes for its vibrant red color. Last year, Royal Rose received a SUPERFOOD certification, increasing the demand for radicchio in juices and salads. “Right now, we are in between peaks, but demand is on track for this time of the year”, added Lyons.

Royal Rose is an OP Valle Company and part of the largest radicchio grower group in the world. Due to its Florida operations, it is the only company in the United States that is able to harvest radicchio fresh on a daily basis. This time of the year, supply is coming from Mexico as well as Florida and Yuma (AZ). These areas will probably wind down early April and production will shift to the Salinas Valley. “There is enough supply and enough people grow radicchio nowadays. As a result, we don’t really see big spikes and dips in the price anymore”, said Lyons. “Prices are steady.”

Radicchio is a member of the chicory family. It is a hearty vegetable with a relatively long shelf-life. It can be found on the shelf with other leaf items and is sold as a loose item. Royal Rose sells its product to food retailers, foodservice companies and wholesalers across the United States and Canada.
