Unique Wholesale Market in Düsseldorf Germany

The wholesale market of the North Rhine Westphalia regional capital Düsseldorf is the home of around 170 market companies. Originally founded in 1936, at the Düsseldorf casemates on the Rhine promenade, the wholesale market has been around since the Second World War, at the point where it is still located today. On the old site of the former Krupp steelworks the wholesale provides within its 17 warehouses everything that its visitors desires. Unique in North Rhine-Westphalia is further that the wholesale market for food shares its area with the wholesale flower market.

The wholesale market guild as stakeholder

On a total area of approximately 165,000 m2 you can see lorries and forklifts in the early morning on the area of the wholesale market. Inside the market halls, the wholesalers are offering their goods to their customers. The market administration of the city of Düsseldorf is responsible for the organization of the wholesale market. The city is also the owner of the wholesale market and its area. Düsseldorf wholesalers have further founded a community of interests, the so-called “Großmarktgilde Düsseldorf – Verband der Düsseldorfer Großmarkthändler und Erzeuger e.V.“. The representative of the market guild is Peter René Hecker. He represents the interests of the wholesalers and is also specialized in the organization of the flower wholesale. He explains: "The fact that we sell fruits and vegetables and also flowers and plants, is unique in North Rhine-Westphalia. Any distributor who wants to sell something on the wholesale market, also needs to be a member of the wholesale market at the same time."

Investment in the future
In the field of food, fruit and vegetables on the wholesale Düsseldorf, Roland Tolls of Berger & Tolls GmbH & Co. KG is responsible. He reports that the regional capital will continue to invest into the future of the wholesale market. The merchant explains: “The wholesale market is changing. They have already restored and renewed some warehouses. Soon they want to restore another two halls. They will tear them down and rebuilt them from the scratch. On top of that, other things like roads, streets and lamps will be renewed." Further to the market guild, the members are working even more closely together. So they buy their goods from each other. "If someone needs something that someone else has, they do business among themselves", said Roland Tolls, "So there is a mutual giving and taking on the market."

Perfect location for international trade
The location of the wholesale market in the north of Düsseldorf, close to the airport and with direct access to several main roads, makes the wholesale market a perfect trading centre for goods from all over the world. "Many traders are also now specialized in the delivery of their products," explains Tolls. With this strategy the merchants satisfy the current needs of large parts of their customers. Their customer base includes daily and farmer’s markets, gastronomy companies, hoteliers and owner of large canteens. Roland Tolls is certain: "The city of Düsseldorf invests heavily in the wholesale market. This will guarantee that the wholesale market will remain as a modern trading centre of the region in the future."
