EU funds onion storage facilities in Senegal

Good news for Senegalese onion producers as the EU announces the construction of 5 onion stocking and drying facilities in the Niayes area, each with a 100 ton capacity and an approximate value of $900,000 (450 million FCFA). These were developed within the PRDCC (Programme to reinforce and develop commercial capacities), with 3,278 billion FCFA financed by the EU through the 9th and 10th European Development Funds.

Onion production in Senegal is going well and is growing every year. Production went from 40,000 tons in 2003 to 260,000 tons in 2013. However, stocking facilities are insufficient and effect market regulations and conservation of onions.
