Saxony: 68,000 tonnes of vegetables harvested in 2014

In the German state of Saxony around 64,200 tonnes of vegetable were harvested from open ground and almost 3,800 tonnes of vegetables from covered cultivation (including greenhouses), reports the German website Proplanta.de. The state's Bureau for Statistics shared that the harvest was almost one third larger compared to the previous year (+31,0%). The cultivation area was extended by 7.8%.

As far as cultivation size is concerned, peas are the main vegetable variety in the state. They were grown on almost 2,300 hectares in 2014. The largest harvest was for onions, with 24,200 tonnes. Onions had a share of 35.6% of the total vegetable harvest in Saxony with this. Other vegetable varieties of which large amounts were harvested included peas with almost 13,800 tonnes, spinach with 4,800 tonnes, green beans with 3,500 tonnes and white cabbage with 3,400 tonnes.
